Postpartum hair loss commonly known as hair loss after pregnancy, is an common concern of all new mothers. The hair loss related to pregnancy is absolutely normal and predictable of the hair cycle. In 9 months of pregnancy or gestation period, the hair loss significantly slows and in certain cases ceases totally and consistently grows. This is why pregnant women hair looks best and fullest during pregnancy. After delivery [Gestation period] or the cessation of breast feeding where appropriate, the hair loss which is perceived to be of an accelerated amount begins. It could be quite distressing for new mothers to find massive hair clumps in hair brush while combing or clogging up the shower drain. But losing hair throughout pregnancy as well as after delivery is a typical condition.
Hair loss can take place in women during and after pregnancy due to hormone imbalances. These hormonal changes might interfere with the hair growth life cycle resulting in hair fall. Some women observes hair loss for 3 – 9 months after maternity. This kind of hair loss is described as postpartum alopecia, which is common and temporary in new mothers. In the normal hair growth cycle everyone lose some hair every day. But during gestation the increased levels of estrogen in body freezes hair in the resting (or "growing") phase of the cycle. Because of this hair which normally fall out stays resulting in thicker and fuller hair. After giving birth, the estrogen levels decline and leads to all that hair that was resting starts to fall out.
Most of women hair will go back to its typical thickness or fullness within 12 months after pregnancy. If the hair does not return to normal it is needed to seek the advice of a Dermatologist or Skin specialist to obtain to the base of the factor for hair loss. People lose hair for several other reasons as well as the reasons could be multi factorial.
- Blood test to rule out Vitamin, Mineral, Iron deficiencies or any Hormonal disorders
- Avoid tight braids , pony tails or hair rollers which can pull and stress the hair causing tractional hair loss
